When starting up your business, it’s hard to know what to do on Social Media or where to start – or even to start at all! Being successful on Social Media and generating sales from your efforts does take time and quite a bit of effort, but even with $0 budget, you can still do it! Here we have collated some tips to help you get the most out of your Social Media efforts.
Fill Out Your Profiles
Make sure every one of your profiles is filled out as much as possible in the correct format for the platform. For instance, Facebook has different sections for you to post in whereas Twitter allows you to use hashtags so you are more searchable.
Use the character space well and stay within brand at all times. Create a unique bio that will make people remember you and encourage them to follow or like you.
Use the correct size profile and header images for each platform and keep it consistent. This will help people to recognise your brand and will keep you looking professional.
The stuff we share on Social Media – the videos, articles, pictures…. That’s content. You should be creating your own so others can share your stuff. Consider writing a blog on your website with industry news, tutorials and thought leadership pieces. That is how you got to this site so you can see it works!
Don’t Spread Yourself Thin
Many people have opened up 10 social media accounts without the capacity to keep them going, most leaving them alone from the get go. The worst thing to do is have a profile which you do not use, or intermittently use!
Focus your attention on the platforms that are producing promising results for you instead of trying to be everywhere. Your audience will appreciate three great social profiles than five okay profiles.
Engage With People
Social Media is called Social Media for a reason, you are supposed to be Social. Make sure you talk to your audience instead of blurting your brand message. Reply to all comments on statuses and all mentions on Twitter, show your audience you are interested in what they have to say. This will make them feel appreciated and will also increase your reach (how many people see your posts).

What better way to attract engaged followers than to encourage those you meet at events to connect online. They know who you are and have shown an interest in your business – it’s a great way to start your following.
Schedule Your Content
Even the top Social Media Managers aren’t awake to post 24 hours a day, neither should you be!
Use a Social Media Scheduling Tool like Buffer or Hootsuite to schedule your content for different hours of the day. Buffer even has a cool “Optimal Timing Tool” which will change your schedule to the most popular times in the day. This will save you weeks of experimentation.

Use Images In Your Post
Image posts have been proven to get more engagement compared to plain text posts, and even get more reach on Facebook. Although videos get more reach than the latter, they are harder to produce consistently.
Along with every article you post, include an image in the post to attract attention. Consider creating a graphic on a free tool like Canva that has the title in it so you can use the text part for a snazzy call-to-action.
Livestreaming is the new phenomenon that is taking the social media world by storm. It allows you to reach your audience in a new way that was never before possible. Livestreaming is live video that you broadcast to your audience. There are two main platforms for livestreaming – Facebook Live and Periscope – both of which can increase your audience substantially. It is by far the most engaging type of content and it doesn’t need to be fantastic to perform well.

For social media to be effective for your business, you need to make sure you are consistent with what you post and how much you post. You need to make sure you a building a relevant following who are interested in your product or service – not just anyone who likes that cat video you shared.
Use Twitter Lists
Often, you will be added to lists on Twitter like Entrepreneur’s or something relevant to your niche. Take a look through the members of this list and follow anyone who could be a potential customer. This can be a great way to increase brand awareness and attract new people to your company without much hassle – someone else has done the leg work!
Create A Plan
For your social media management to be less overwhelming, create a plan for each platform along with some guidelines. If need be, this allows you to share the load with someone else and also gives you a direction in which to go.
I recommend starting with ten different types of content ie – testimonial, own blog content, curated content, video, livestream, lead magnet….
